Another Day in Bar Harbor area and Acadia National Park

Oceanarium and Lobster Hatchery

The first place Bill and I visited today was what appeared to be an uninspiring Oceanarium. From the road there was just a little sign that said Oceanarium and Lobster Hatchery and museum. We saw the sign yesterday and couldn't imagine but it sounded interesting so we thought we would check it out. At the hatchery a marine biologist supervises the raising of lobster in a laboratory environment and releases them back to the wild. She was educated  at Southern Mississippi University. They don't sell the babies to make money. There is no longer government supplement for hatcheries so all the hatcheries in the US except this one have closed. They depend on ticket sales and donations. When we arrived there were only a few people but while listening to the fisherman's talk a tour bus from a cruise ship unloaded and filled the place up. They also had a lobster boat in the museum where an x-lobster fisherman talked for about 40 minutes about lobster fishing. Then we saw a indoor tide pool where the demonstrator picked up each ocean animal and told us all about it. (star fish, sea urchin, sea snail, horseshoe crab and a regular crab)

From the lobster museum we went to a local potter's studio. He was quite impressive. He fired to the same cone I do but made his on clay and glazes. The glazes were lovely. http://www.rockymann.com/

Then we stopped for lunch at a local log cabin restaurant. We had lobster rolls. It was OK.

We went back to the RV and picked up the dogs and went back to Acadia National Park. We first saw Somes Sound. It was beautiful and peaceful. There were lobster pots dotted all through the sound. They are visible by their bouy floating on the water.

We drove on south on Rt. 3 and stopped at Hadlock Pond Trail. We walked that trail for a mile to a mile and 1/2 and never found the pond but it was a beautiful hike. The scenary was so serene and the dogs had a ball.

After a beautiful hike we stopped for groceries and came to the RV and sat by a fire for awhile until it got too cool.

  1. You 3 girls look great! Looks like Bill and Rojo are having a good time on the hike too, its beautiful. Sounds like the hatchery was super interesting, probably more than you ever thought about when it came to lobsters. I'm going to check out the rockyman website. Are the fall colors out yet?
